Scholar's Story:

"First and foremost, my name is Kathy Campos and I was born in San Francisco California, but raised in Bakersfield California. I am a first-generation student currently attending San Francisco State University, majoring in Business Finance with a minor in Latina/o Studies. My ultimate goal is to continue on to law school and become an immigration lawyer and work for the ACLU.

Since I can remember my heart was set on being able to continue my education in the city I love the most. When I received my acceptance to San Francisco State and broke the news to my family I received an enormous amount of backlash. Being low income my parents warned me I would financially be making the biggest mistake by choosing to move to San Francisco. Simply put, it was a better idea to stay in Bakersfield.

On behalf of San Francisco State I was 1 of the 84 students chosen to receive the Future Scholars Scholarship allowing me to fully commit and attend San Francisco State. I personally was not worried about how I would perform academically because I know myself and what I am capable of. What I encountered to be difficult was adjusting to living almost 300 miles away from home because of how family oriented I am.

"What helped me overcome this was discovering the opportunity to be a part of something more than just going to class."

There were many occasions where I wanted the ability to just turn around and have my mother or sister there. Because of this I found living on campus difficult at first. I had a hard time trying to differentiate school from home. I started to feel overwhelmed with this feeling of being surrounded by just school. What helped me overcome this was discovering the opportunity to be a part of something more than just going to class.

In the beginning of my spring semester I rushed Alpha Gamma Delta and it was the best decision I have made thus far. Being able to be surrounded by other women who are also goal oriented has truly inspired and pushed me to want more from my education. In other words I found my home with Alpha Gamma Delta. Especially though the rough times many of us are experiencing as a result of this pandemic, the extra support I have been receiving by my sisters reminds me I am not alone. With being first-generation and away from home it becomes easy to feel alone and overwhelmed, but I can assure you, someone is always there rooting for your success."
